ok, so i'm going to be doing a bit of back-blogging... and not just to day 1 of my current cleanse, which was 5 days ago, but to a week before that when my boyfriend and i made our true first attempt at the cleanse.
first of all, let me just remind all you budding cleansers that grocery shopping and the process of juicing itself take up a chunk of the day. don't get up and expect to grocery shop, juice and have that be day 1-- it won't be. it'll be more like a day 0. we learned this lesson quickly when grocery shopping took up the entire afternoon-- granted i picked a complicated green juice recipe (see below)... we were buying, something like, 34 cucumbers, 10 bunches of kale and 20 pears among other things-- and, by the time we were done juicing 3 days worth of juice, it was 7pm and we were STARVING.
so, then, we ordered indian food.
i know, i know... but i think the lesson here is: it's OK to not be perfect. just make sure you jump back on the wagon again.
day 1 started the next day. the green juice we made was sooo good and i was on fire. my energy level was out of this world-- i was at the gym pedalling away on the bike like it was nothing, which is totally weird because i'm usually such a martyr at the gym. my mind was crystal and my mood was awesome (although i was a little distracted by my usual sugar cravings).
physical energy: 10
mental energy: 10
mood: 8
so what about all those detox symptoms i was vehemently warned about? headaches, body aches, nasea, runny nose... even vomiting? i was told by an experienced cleanser that my body was probably still feeding off of the chicken tikka marsala from the night before and the detox just hadn't quite kicked in. apparently, day 2 - 5 are the real kickers.
...and she was right.
the final lesson of this post is: schedule your cleanse well. i happened to start my cleanse on the first day of finals week before spring break-- bad idea. day 2 came with dizziness and headaches that i simply couldn't afford, so i stuffed some sushi in my mouth and decided to postpone the cleanse until spring break.
the BEST green juice recipe to kickstart a cleanse with:
MAKE JUICE, NOT WAR GREEN JUICE - courtesy of the lovely kris carr
(makes 2 servings/32 oz.)
2 large cucumbers
4-5 stalks kale
4-5 romaine leaves
4 stalks celery
1-2 big broccoli stems
1-2 pears
1" piece ginger
1 bunch sweet pea shoots
1/2 lemon squeezed (optional)
this stuff is POTENT.
